The Federal Investigation Agency has launched a nationwide crackdown on money laundering, introducing stricter enforcement measures and updated procedures to combat financial crimes. The move signals a major step toward strengthening financial oversight across the country.
The initiative, approved by the FIA director general, includes the establishment of a dedicated Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) at the agency’s headquarters. This unit is aimed at improving monitoring, coordination, and investigation of suspicious financial activities.
Officials revealed that a modern system has been deployed to ensure immediate action on suspicious transactions. This system will enhance real-time tracking and allow authorities to respond quickly to potential money laundering cases.
Reports from the Financial Monitoring Unit will now be processed directly by the FIA, significantly improving response time and operational efficiency. This integration is expected to streamline the handling of financial intelligence data.
The agency has also introduced strict timelines for resolving money laundering cases and announced the establishment of Financial Intelligence Desks in all zones. These desks will operate under assistant directors to strengthen regional oversight and enforcement.
Separately, the FIA has warned citizens about a rise in online fraud and cybercrime, particularly on platforms like WhatsApp. Officials reported cases where criminals send fake FIRs through messages to create panic and harass individuals.
An FIA spokesperson clarified that the agency does not issue FIRs via WhatsApp and urged the public to report such suspicious messages to its cybercrime wing immediately. The crackdown reflects broader efforts to enhance financial security and protect citizens from emerging digital threats.
