Senior journalist Matiullah Jan has been fired from Neo News TV after controversy linked to a recent press club event in Islamabad. The decision followed strong backlash from sections of the media community and officials.
The development comes after a dinner hosted by Matiullah Jan on April 25. The event was arranged for foreign journalists covering US–Iran diplomatic talks in Islamabad. However, it triggered criticism and accusations of misconduct.
Reports suggest that pressure increased after the gathering at the National Press Club. Some journalists claimed the event became politically sensitive. As a result, Matiullah Jan was reportedly fired from his position at the news channel.
Journalist Asad Toor stated that Jan has been fired due to ongoing pressure after the incident. He also said that Jan has faced professional setbacks under different governments over the years. According to him, similar situations occurred during the PTI era as well.
In his own response, Matiullah Jan confirmed that his association with Neo News TV has ended abruptly. He thanked the channel’s management for their support over the past three and a half years. He said he respects their decision despite the outcome.
Jan also stated that his work in support of democracy, free speech, and journalists’ rights should not be treated as wrongdoing. He added that being fired from media positions is not new for him and has happened before in his career.
The controversy began when the April 25 event at the National Press Club hosted foreign journalists. It was reportedly held despite earlier requests to postpone due to another official event.
During the gathering, discussions included press freedom issues and legal cases involving journalists. These remarks reportedly turned the event into a politically sensitive discussion.
Some officials accused Jan of misusing the press club platform. They also raised concerns about the branding and presentation of the event.
The situation escalated when some foreign journalists reportedly felt misled. They said the event shifted from a professional meeting into a political discussion.
Despite criticism, Matiullah Jan defended his actions. He said his statements highlighted concerns about press freedom, journalist arrests, and restrictions under cyber laws.
The issue remains widely discussed in media circles, while Jan has now been formally fired from Neo News TV.
