Saudi Arabia Expands Major Projects in Makkah To Modernize Transport

Saudi Arabia has announced new development plans to upgrade transport and public services in Makkah. The new plan includes a major airport expansion and a metro system. These major projects aim to improve services for residents and millions of pilgrims.

Saleh Al-Rasheed, CEO of the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites, confirmed approval of the Makkah Airport development framework. The airport will be upgraded to international standards. Officials say the project will be developed with private sector support.

The government is also moving forward with the Makkah Metro plan. Feasibility studies and initial designs have already been completed. These major projects are part of a wider strategy to improve city transport systems.

Authorities are also focusing on improving urban services. This includes housing, infrastructure, and public facilities. The goal is to align development with community needs and improve visitor experience.

Officials aim to reach a 90.5% satisfaction rate by 2025. This target reflects ongoing efforts to enhance service quality in the holy city.

A key part of the major projects program is the โ€œSmart Makkahโ€ initiative. It uses artificial intelligence to manage crowds around the Grand Mosque. The system helps monitor movement in real time and improves safety.

Transport upgrades also include improved bus and taxi systems. A modern โ€œMakkah Taxiโ€ service has been launched with tracking features and digital payments. Electric and hybrid vehicles are also part of the system.

The bus network currently operates 400 buses across 12 routes. It covers most neighborhoods and serves hundreds of stops. This expansion supports smoother travel during peak seasons.

Other major projects include infrastructure improvements around the Grand Mosque. These include maintenance facilities, escalators, and expanded service areas. The goal is to improve crowd flow and operational efficiency.

Development work is also ongoing in Mina and Arafat. New tents, hospitals, and residential towers are being built for pilgrims. These upgrades aim to improve safety and comfort during Hajj.

Sustainability efforts are also part of the plan. Thousands of trees are being planted. Shaded walkways and water systems are also being developed to improve the environment.

Officials say these major projects will also support private sector participation. New transport stations and markets are being built to improve economic activity.

Overall, the initiatives reflect a large-scale transformation plan for Makkah. The focus remains on modern infrastructure, better services, and improved pilgrim experience.
