Punjab has become the first province in Pakistan to launch a government-backed Insurance Company, marking a major step in expanding financial protection services for citizens.
The newly established Punjab Life Insurance Company has also achieved the fastest registration in the country’s history with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). Officials said the initiative aims to provide insurance coverage to people from all economic and social backgrounds across Punjab.
The provincial government believes the new Insurance Company will improve access to financial protection and strengthen public welfare services. Specialized insurance plans are expected to be introduced for different groups of citizens.
A high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif reviewed the progress of Punjab Life Insurance Company and the proposed Punjab General Insurance Company. Officials gave a detailed briefing about the structure, operations, and future plans of both institutions.
According to officials, the Punjab General Insurance Company will work under the Finance Department. It will handle all non-life insurance requirements for government departments and institutions across the province.
The board of the new Insurance Company will include senior government officials. These include the Chairman of Planning and Development, the Finance Secretary, and the President of the Bank of Punjab.
Authorities have already sent a summary regarding the establishment of the company to the provincial cabinet for final approval. Officials expect the approval process to move forward soon.
During the meeting, Maryam Nawaz directed authorities to involve the private sector in the insurance framework. She said private sector participation could improve efficiency, expand outreach, and strengthen service delivery.
The chief minister appreciated the quick registration process and the business planning behind both insurance projects. She stated that Punjab has always taken the lead in reforms and innovation and would continue doing so in the future.
Maryam Nawaz also highlighted plans for a broader health insurance policy in Punjab. Under the proposed plan, citizens would be able to receive treatment at hospitals and medical facilities of their choice.
Officials said the provincial government wants to modernize Pakistan’s insurance sector and align it with international standards. Experts believe the launch of a government-backed Insurance Company could encourage more financial reforms in other provinces as well.
