Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced a major expansion of the province’s public transport system with plans to introduce EV Buses across all 148 tehsils of Punjab.
The initiative is part of the provincial government’s broader strategy to modernize transportation, improve travel facilities for citizens, and reduce environmental pollution caused by fuel-powered vehicles.
According to officials, the new EV Buses project aims to provide safer, cleaner, and more comfortable transport services for commuters across urban and semi-urban areas of Punjab.
The provincial administration believes electric transport can help reduce traffic pollution and support environmentally friendly mobility solutions in the province.
Earlier, the Punjab government had already approved electric bus services for 10 additional districts. These districts included Gujranwala, Sialkot, Sheikhupura, and several other cities where transport demand has increased rapidly in recent years.
Officials say the latest decision will now extend the project to all tehsils across Punjab, making the initiative one of the largest public transport expansion plans in the province.
The government is also speeding up development work related to metro bus stations and transport infrastructure in important cities such as Faisalabad and Gujranwala.
Authorities stated that improving public transport systems remains a top priority for the provincial government. They believe modern transport networks can reduce travel difficulties faced by daily commuters.
The planned EV Buses are expected to offer better facilities while also lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Experts say electric vehicles can play an important role in improving air quality in crowded urban areas.
Officials added that electric transport systems are becoming increasingly popular worldwide due to their environmental and economic benefits. Many countries are now shifting toward electric mobility to reduce dependence on traditional fuel sources.
The Punjab government says the transport project will also help strengthen mass transit systems in different districts. Improved transport services are expected to benefit students, office workers, labourers, and families who rely on public transportation daily.
Authorities further explained that upgrading transport infrastructure can support economic activity and improve connectivity between different cities and tehsils.
Transport experts believe the success of the initiative will depend on efficient operations, charging infrastructure, and long-term maintenance planning.
The provincial administration has not yet announced a complete rollout schedule for all districts. However, officials confirmed that planning and development work is already moving forward.
