Araghchi Says Pakistan-Mediated US Talks Face Challenges but Have Not Failed

Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi has said that Pakistan-mediated talks between Iran and the United States have not failed, but are currently facing serious difficulties due to growing mistrust and conflicting signals from Washington.

Speaking during a press conference in New Delhi, Araghchi stated that Iran remains open to diplomacy, but stressed that meaningful negotiations are only possible if both sides are serious about the process.

He said Iran does not trust the United States because of what he described as “contradictory messages” coming from Washington during the ongoing diplomatic efforts.

According to Araghchi, the talks are passing through a difficult stage rather than collapsing completely. He added that Pakistan’s role as a mediator remains important despite the challenges.

The Iranian foreign minister also discussed regional tensions and security issues during the press conference. He said Iran did not initiate conflict in the region and acted only in self-defence.

Araghchi further stated that Tehran is trying to maintain the current ceasefire situation and avoid further escalation in the region.

During the briefing, he also commented on the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping routes. He said Iran was not responsible for disruptions in the waterway.

According to him, the Strait of Hormuz is only restricted for countries directly involved in hostilities against Tehran.

He added that several Indian ships had recently been guided safely through the strait with assistance from Iranian naval forces. He described the regional situation as “very complex” and said vessels must coordinate with the Iranian navy while passing through the area.

Araghchi also repeated Iran’s position regarding its nuclear programme. He stated that Iran has no intention of developing nuclear weapons and insisted that Tehran’s nuclear activities remain peaceful.

The foreign minister confirmed that Russia had proposed a uranium enrichment transfer arrangement. However, he said Iran is not currently considering the proposal.

He also mentioned that discussions with the United States regarding uranium enrichment remain deadlocked at this stage.

On ties with Moscow, Araghchi described relations between Iran and Russia as a “very good strategic partnership.” He said he had recently held constructive discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

The Iranian minister additionally claimed that the United States and Israel had failed to fully protect the United Arab Emirates during past regional tensions. He said Iranian operations had only targeted US military bases in the Gulf region.

Araghchi again stressed that Iran supports diplomacy and peaceful dialogue. However, he warned that inconsistent messages from Washington continue to create doubts regarding American intentions.
