A growing investigation is underway in the United States after a suspected Cyber Attack targeted fuel monitoring systems used at gas stations across the country. US cybersecurity officials believe the activity may be connected to Iran-linked hacking groups, although no official attribution has been confirmed so far.
According to investigators, the attackers focused on automatic tank gauge systems, commonly known as ATG systems. These systems are used by gas stations to monitor fuel levels inside underground storage tanks. Officials said the affected systems were connected to the internet and lacked proper password protection.
The Cyber Attack reportedly allowed hackers to access fuel monitoring dashboards remotely. In some cases, the attackers changed the displayed fuel readings. However, authorities confirmed that the actual fuel inside the tanks was not altered or stolen.
Officials also stated that no fuel leaks, explosions, or physical damage were reported during the incident. Despite this, cybersecurity experts warned that such access could create serious risks in the future.
Experts explained that hackers with access to ATG systems could potentially hide real fuel leaks or interrupt important safety monitoring operations. This has raised concerns about the security of industrial systems connected to oil and gas infrastructure in the United States.
The FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency are currently investigating the Cyber Attack. So far, officials have not publicly named any group responsible because forensic evidence remains limited.
Investigators said the suspected methods resemble previous cyber operations linked to Iranian hackers. In recent years, Iran-linked groups have been accused of targeting US infrastructure, including water systems, energy facilities, and government networks.
Cybersecurity researchers have repeatedly warned that many industrial control systems remain poorly protected online. Experts believe these systems are attractive targets because they often use weak passwords or outdated software.
The latest incident comes during ongoing geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Iran, and Israel. Security analysts say cyber operations have increasingly become part of modern international conflicts.
