Government Clarifies Position On Voting Age Limit in Pakistan

Government Clarifies Position On Voting Age Limit in Pakistan

Prime Ministerโ€™s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah has addressed public concerns regarding electoral rights. He clarified that no constitutional change is being considered to reduce youth voting rights. The discussion comes amid ongoing political debates.

He stated that the government respects the opinions of all stakeholders. However, he firmly rejected any proposal related to changing voter eligibility. According to him, there is no plan to alter the current system related to the voting age limit.

Rana Sanaullah emphasized that young citizens will continue to enjoy their right to vote. He said the government supports democratic participation. He also noted that such rights are protected under the Constitution of Pakistan.

The adviser further added that Pakistan is moving towards greater stability. He expressed optimism about the countryโ€™s future role in global peace. He also highlighted national unity and cooperation as key priorities.

During his remarks, he indirectly addressed rumors circulating in political discussions. He made it clear that no effort is underway to change the voting age limit. He urged people not to spread unverified information.

At present, the voting age limit in Pakistan is 18 years. This rule is defined under Article 106(2) of the Constitution. It states that a citizen must be 18 or older, registered on the electoral list, and mentally sound to vote.

Pakistan reduced its voting age from 21 to 18 in 2002. The change was introduced during the tenure of former military ruler Pervez Musharraf. This reform aligned Pakistan with many democratic countries worldwide.

Experts note that any future change to the voting age limit would require a constitutional amendment. Such an amendment would need a two-thirds majority in Parliament. This makes any alteration a complex legislative process.

Rana Sanaullah also touched on broader political matters. He mentioned that the government is preparing a relief-focused budget package. The package is expected to be announced by the prime minister soon.

Overall, the statement aims to clear confusion around electoral rules. It confirms that the voting age limit remains unchanged and protected under existing law.
