Once-in-Years Blue Moon to Light Up Sky This Weekend; Full Details Inside

Astronomers are preparing for a rare celestial event as a Blue Moon is set to appear on May 31, 2026. The event will attract skywatchers across the world. The Blue Moon is not a change in colour, but a timing phenomenon.

According to experts, May 2026 will feature two full Moons. The first full Moon appeared on May 1. The second full Moon will rise on May 31. This makes it a classic calendar Blue Moon, which occurs when two full Moons appear in one month.

Despite its name, the Blue Moon will look like a normal full Moon. It will not show any visible blue colour. The term is based on lunar calendar timing, not appearance. The lunar cycle lasts about 29.5 days, which occasionally allows two full Moons in a single month.

Astronomers note that such events are rare. The last Blue Moon occurred on August 30, 2023. The next one is expected in December 2028. This shows how uncommon the alignment is in the lunar calendar.

This upcoming Blue Moon also has another feature. It will be a micromoon. This means the Moon will be at its farthest point from Earth in its orbit. As a result, it may appear slightly smaller than usual.

Reports suggest the Moon will be about 406,134 kilometres away from Earth. It will reach peak fullness at 8:45 UTC on May 31. That equals 4:45 a.m. ET and 9:45 a.m. UK time. Sky conditions will determine visibility in different regions.

Experts explain that a Blue Moon happens because lunar cycles do not match the calendar perfectly. The mismatch occasionally creates two full Moons in one month. This is a natural and predictable event.

There are also myths linked to the Blue Moon, but scientists reject them. The Moon does not change colour in reality. Any rare bluish tint only happens due to atmospheric conditions like volcanic dust or wildfire smoke.

Astronomers confirm that a Blue Moon has no effect on human behavior or events on Earth. It is simply a calendar coincidence. However, it remains a fascinating and widely discussed sky event.

Skywatchers are expected to observe the Blue Moon with great interest. Even though it looks ordinary, its rarity makes it special for astronomy lovers worldwide.
