Nepra Hikes Electricity Tariff By Rs1.19 Per Unit Under Fuel Adjustment

Nepra Hikes Electricity Tariff By Rs1.19 Per Unit Under Fuel Adjustment

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved an increase in electricity prices under the monthly fuel price adjustment mechanism. The latest decision means consumers will pay an additional Rs1.19 per unit in their electricity bills, according to an official notification.

The move comes after a review of fuel costs for April 2026. Officials said the adjustment was necessary because actual fuel expenses were higher than the reference cost used in tariff calculations. As a result, Nepra hikes electricity rates for consumers across the country.

According to the notification, the additional charge of Rs1.19 per unit will be recovered through electricity bills issued in June 2026. The increase will apply to customers of K-Electric as well as consumers served by former WAPDA distribution companies, commonly known as DISCOs.

NEPRA explained that the national average fuel charge component was set at Rs8.2 per unit. However, the actual fuel cost recorded during April reached Rs9.4 per unit. This difference led to the approved adjustment. Therefore, Nepra hikes tariffs to bridge the gap between projected and actual fuel expenses.

The regulator clarified that not all consumers will be affected by the increase. Lifeline consumers, who use limited amounts of electricity, will remain exempt from the additional charges. Similarly, prepaid electricity users and electric vehicle charging stations will not be subject to the revised rates.

Officials further stated that the fuel adjustment will apply to units consumed under the incremental consumption package. The additional charges will be calculated based on electricity usage recorded during April 2026.

The notification also outlined the recovery process. Consumers will see the extra amount reflected in the current billing cycle. In cases where June bills have already been issued, the adjustment will be added to future bills.

Energy experts note that fuel price adjustments are a routine part of Pakistanโ€™s power pricing system. These adjustments are designed to reflect changes in fuel costs used for electricity generation. When actual costs exceed estimates, consumers are required to cover the difference through revised tariffs.

With the latest decision, Nepra hikes electricity charges once again, affecting millions of consumers nationwide. The adjustment highlights the impact of fluctuating fuel costs on the country’s power sector and household electricity expenses.

Authorities have advised consumers to review their upcoming bills carefully. While exempt categories will not face additional charges, most regular consumers will see the revised rate included in their billing statements.

The latest development means Nepra hikes electricity tariffs under the fuel cost adjustment mechanism, adding Rs1.19 per unit to eligible consumers’ bills in the coming weeks.
