The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee meets today in Lahore for the sighting of the Muharram crescent. The meeting is being held for the Islamic month of Muharram-ul-Haram 1448 Hijri.
Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad will preside over the session. The committee will review testimonies and astronomical data before announcing its decision.
Zonal and district Ruet-e-Hilal Committees also meets today at their respective headquarters. These parallel meetings are part of the national moon sighting process across Pakistan.
Authorities will collectively examine reports from different regions. The final announcement will be made after reviewing all available evidence.
The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has issued its forecast ahead of the meeting. It stated that the chances of sighting the Muharram moon on June 15 are extremely low.
According to SUPARCO, the new moon of Muharram 1448 AH will be born at 7:54 am on June 15, 2026. However, visibility in Pakistan on the same evening is highly unlikely.
Based on astronomical calculations, experts expect that 1 Muharram 1448 AH will fall on Wednesday, June 17, 2026. This prediction is widely aligned with scientific data.
The report further suggests that Zil Hajj 1447 AH is likely to complete a 30-day cycle. This means the Islamic month will end before Muharram begins.
Officials also noted that at sunset, the moonโs age will be around 11 hours and 50 minutes. In coastal areas, the difference between sunset and moonset may be about 40 minutes.
The committeeโs decision will determine the official start of Muharram in Pakistan. Religious scholars, meteorological experts, and government representatives will participate in the process.
The meeting is considered important for setting the religious calendar. Once the decision is finalized, an official announcement will be shared with the public.
As the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee meets today, citizens across the country await confirmation of the new Islamic month and related observances.
