The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has decided to nominate Advocate Amjad Hussain for the position of Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan following the recent regional elections.
According to sources, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has chosen the party’s provincial president, Amjad Hussain, as the candidate for the province’s top executive office. The decision comes as political parties continue consultations regarding the formation of a new government in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Sources said Bilawal Bhutto Zardari personally contacted Amjad Hussain and discussed the party’s priorities for the region. During the conversation, he reportedly emphasized the importance of protecting the constitutional and economic rights of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.
The nomination follows the recent Gilgit-Baltistan elections, where PPP emerged as the largest party. Official results released by the Election Commission of Gilgit-Baltistan show that PPP secured nine seats out of the 21 constituencies for which results have been announced.
According to the results, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) won six seats, while the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) secured four seats. Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) won one seat, and one independent candidate was also successful.
Amjad Hussain himself won the election from constituency GBA-1 Gilgit, strengthening his position within the party and making him a strong contender for the chief minister’s office.
Meanwhile, political developments in the region suggest that PPP and PML-N have reached an understanding to form a coalition government in Gilgit-Baltistan. Sources familiar with the discussions said leaders from both parties held extensive consultations with their local leadership before finalizing the arrangement.
The two parties have reportedly agreed to work together through mutual cooperation and consensus. They have also developed a joint formula for government formation aimed at ensuring political stability in the region.
If the coalition arrangement moves forward as planned, PPP’s nominee is expected to take the lead in the new provincial setup. The nomination of Amjad Hussain marks an important step in the government formation process and could shape the political direction of Gilgit-Baltistan in the coming years.
