LAHORE – Authorities in Punjab and Karachi have finalized extensive security plans for Muharram 9 processions and religious gatherings. Thousands of security personnel have been deployed to ensure public safety and maintain order during the observance.
According to Punjab Police, more than 152,000 officers and personnel are performing security duties during Muharram across the province. For Muharram 9, over 70,000 officers have been assigned to special security responsibilities.
Officials said that 1,697 mourning processions and 3,869 religious gatherings are scheduled across Punjab. These include 208 Category-A processions and 337 Category-A religious gatherings, which require enhanced security measures.
In Lahore alone, 81 processions and 386 gatherings are expected to take place. Among them, 26 processions and 46 gatherings have been classified as Category-A events due to their size and sensitivity.
Punjab Police leadership has directed all field officers to remain alert and ensure strict implementation of security protocols. Authorities have stressed the importance of coordination among law enforcement agencies, district administrations, and community representatives.
Religious scholars and community leaders have also been encouraged to promote peace, harmony, and mutual respect during Muharram 9 observances. Officials believe public cooperation will play an important role in maintaining a peaceful environment.
Senior police officers are personally monitoring security and traffic arrangements. Surveillance cameras, walk-through gates, rooftop deployments, and plainclothes commandos have been positioned along major procession routes. Additional monitoring teams have also been assigned to identify and prevent any potential security threats.
In Lahore, the main mourning procession will begin from Nisar Haveli and conclude at Karbala Gamay Shah after passing through its traditional route. Another major procession will start from Pando Street, proceed to Khaima-e-Sadat, and return to its starting point. A third major procession will be taken out from Qasr-e-Batool in Shadman.
Several Zuljinah processions are also scheduled from areas including Lal Pul Nabi Pur Shian, Model Town, Chuhng, and Thokar Niaz Baig.
Meanwhile, Karachi’s central Muharram 9 procession will commence from Nishtar Park after a religious gathering. The procession will travel through designated routes before ending at Hussainia Iranian Imambargah in Kharadar.
More than 5,000 police personnel, supported by Rangers, have been deployed in Karachi. Authorities have sealed surrounding streets, strengthened surveillance measures, and arranged alternative traffic routes to minimize inconvenience for residents.
