KP Police Makes History by Appointing First Two Women as DPOs

PESHAWAR: KP Police has appointed two women as district police officers (DPOs) for the first time in the province’s history. The decision marks a major milestone for women serving in law enforcement in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to a notification issued by the Central Police Office, Sonia Shamroz has been appointed as the District Police Officer (DPO) of Nowshera. Resham Jahangir has been posted as the DPO of Lower Chitral.

The appointments come at a time when the province continues to face significant law and order challenges. Officials believe the decision reflects growing confidence in the leadership, experience, and professional abilities of women officers in KP Police.

Sonia Shamroz has played an important role in the province’s police force over the years. She became the second female Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) to serve in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after Anoosh Masood Chaudhry. Both officers joined the Police Service of Pakistan through the CSS examination and selected the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP) as their first career choice.

Anoosh Masood Chaudhry belonged to the 40th Common Training Programme, while Sonia Shamroz was part of the 41st Common Training Programme. Helena Rizwan Tareen, who belonged to the 23rd Common Training Programme, was the first woman officer to join the Police Service of Pakistan.

Women officers have continued to take on important responsibilities across the province. Ayesha Gul is currently serving as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Investigation in Peshawar. Maria Mustafa is serving as SP Investigation in Mardan.

Several women officers recruited by KP Police have also been promoted to the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP). These include Shazia Shahid, Rozia Altaf, Anila Naz, Shahzadi Noshad, Ismat Khattak, Hameeda, and several others.

The latest notification also announced a number of additional transfers and postings. Riffatullah has been appointed DPO Charsadda, Furqan Bilal has been posted as DPO Bannu, Ikramullah has been assigned as DPO Shangla, and Talal Ahmad Shah will serve as DPO Lower Dir.

Meanwhile, Waqas Khan has been appointed as Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Logistics. Yasir Afridi will attend a Senior Management Course, while Ahmad Shah has been named AIG Establishment, replacing Sonia Shamroz.

Over the past few years, women officers have gradually taken on more operational duties within KP Police. Policewomen have served as additional SHOs in districts including Khyber, Peshawar, Mardan, and Kurram. One woman officer also briefly served as SHO of Gulberg Police Station in Peshawar.
