LAHORE: A tragic roof collapse at a tuition academy in the Lahore Kahna area claimed the lives of at least 14 children on Tuesday, while several others were injured, according to rescue officials.
The incident occurred during a tuition class when the classroom roof suddenly collapsed. Many students were trapped under the debris, triggering a large-scale rescue operation.
According to Rescue 1122, more than 25 children and one teacher were initially buried beneath the rubble. Rescue teams, police personnel, and local volunteers rushed to the scene to remove debris and search for survivors.
Authorities later confirmed that 14 children had lost their lives in the incident. Rescue officials also said that eight to ten injured children were in critical condition and were shifted to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.
Officials stated that the collapsed roof had been constructed using T-R girders. They added that the exact cause of the collapse has not yet been determined. A detailed investigation will begin after rescue operations are fully completed.
The tragedy in the Lahore Kahna area has left families and residents in deep shock. Relatives gathered outside hospitals and the accident site as rescue workers continued their efforts.
Rescue authorities identified several of the victims. Those who lost their lives include seven-year-old Mah Noor Farooq, seven-year-old Rimsha Atif, five-year-old Murtaza Atif, nine-year-old Ghulam Nabi, six-year-old Tabisha Shehzad, sixteen-year-old Khadija, daughter of Wasim, six-year-old Salman, son of Wasim, and eight-year-old Fawad, son of Abid. Officials said the identities of other victims would be confirmed after completing official procedures.
According to THQ Kahna Hospital, six injured victims are in stable condition. Doctors said eight-year-old Abiha, ten-year-old Faria, eleven-year-old Murtaza, eight-year-old Ayan, and seven-year-old Rabia are receiving medical treatment. Hamida Rehan, aged 30, is also under treatment and is reported to be out of danger.
Authorities said rescue teams completed most of the search operation, but work continued to ensure no one remained trapped under the debris. Heavy machinery was used carefully to avoid causing further damage.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of buildings used as private tuition centres. Officials are expected to examine whether construction standards and safety regulations were properly followed.
