Lahore’s Metro Bus Service has launched separate buses for female passengers to improve safety and reduce overcrowding during daily travel. The initiative is part of the Punjab government’s efforts to make public transport more comfortable and secure for women.
Officials said five Speedo buses have been added to the Metro Bus fleet on a temporary basis. These separate buses will operate exclusively for women on the existing Metro Bus route across Lahore.
The Transport and Mass Transit Department announced that the new arrangement aims to provide a better travel experience for female commuters. Authorities believe the move will help women travel with greater confidence, especially during busy hours.
Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan said the decision was made following the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. He stated that improving public transport for women remains a key priority of the provincial government.
According to the minister, the separate buses were introduced to reduce congestion inside Metro Bus vehicles. He added that the initiative is also intended to help prevent harassment and make daily commuting safer for women.
Thousands of women use Lahore’s Metro Bus Service every day for work, education, and other routine activities. During peak hours, heavy passenger traffic often creates crowded conditions inside buses.
Officials believe dedicated buses for women will improve passenger comfort while reducing pressure on the regular Metro Bus fleet. The temporary arrangement will also help authorities assess demand before expanding the service.
Bilal Akbar Khan said the government plans to purchase additional Metro buses in the near future. These new vehicles will allow authorities to permanently allocate dedicated transport services for female passengers.
He explained that providing safe public transport encourages greater participation of women in education, employment, and other social activities. Reliable transportation also improves accessibility across the city.
The minister added that more initiatives would be introduced to strengthen urban transport services in Punjab. Authorities will continue reviewing passenger feedback to improve the system further.
