The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has launched a Rs900 million expansion and renovation project at Skardu Airport to improve passenger facilities and support the growing tourism industry in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The development project aims to modernize Skardu Airport and prepare it for increased domestic and future international flight operations. Officials believe the upgrade will help meet rising passenger demand while improving the overall travel experience.
According to the Pakistan Airports Authority, the project includes expanding the airport’s terminal building, passenger lounges, check-in counters, parking facilities, and cargo infrastructure.
One of the biggest improvements will be the expansion of the terminal building. The existing terminal, which currently covers around 21,000 square feet, will be enlarged to approximately 39,000 square feet. This will provide more space for passengers and airport operations.
The departure lounge will also receive a major upgrade. Its current capacity of 300 passengers will increase to 900, allowing the airport to handle significantly larger numbers of travelers during busy seasons.
Similarly, the arrival lounge will be expanded. The facility will be able to accommodate up to 200 passengers instead of the current capacity of 80, helping reduce congestion during flight arrivals.
The project also includes improvements to passenger check-in services. The number of check-in counters will increase from six to ten, allowing faster processing and shorter waiting times.
Parking facilities at Skardu Airport will also be expanded to meet future demand. The parking area will grow from space for 200 vehicles to around 600 vehicles, making it more convenient for travelers and visitors.
In addition, the Pakistan Airports Authority plans to construct a modern cargo office block as part of the project. The new cargo facility is expected to improve freight handling and support commercial activity in the region.
Officials say these upgrades are designed to strengthen the airport’s ability to accommodate future growth. The expansion is also expected to make Skardu Airport more attractive for international airlines considering operations in northern Pakistan.
Tourism has grown steadily in Gilgit-Baltistan over recent years. Skardu has become one of Pakistan’s most popular travel destinations because of its mountains, lakes, trekking routes, and natural scenery.
Authorities believe better airport facilities will encourage more domestic and foreign tourists to visit the region. Improved infrastructure could also benefit local businesses, hotels, transport services, and the broader tourism sector.
According to PAA spokesperson Saifullah Khan, construction work is currently in its initial phase. He said line-marking work has already started as part of the early development process.
