Karachi authorities have declared a citywide high alert ahead of expected Heavy Monsoon Rains. Emergency teams have been mobilized to reduce the risk of urban flooding and ensure drainage systems remain operational during the forecast rainfall.
As the monsoon season strengthens across Pakistan, rainfall has already affected several parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Weather officials now expect Heavy Monsoon Rains to reach Karachi, prompting local authorities to activate emergency response plans.
Following the directions of the mayor, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has issued a high alert across the city. The utility has instructed all departments to keep emergency drainage operations fully functional throughout the expected spell of rain.
KWSC Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Ali Siddiqui directed all concerned officers and operational staff to remain on alert. He emphasized the need for uninterrupted drainage work to prevent water accumulation on roads and in residential areas.
Senior officials, including Zonal Chief Engineers, Superintending Engineers, Executive Engineers, and field teams, have been instructed to remain in their assigned areas. They will personally supervise operations to ensure a quick response to any emergency during the rainfall.
Authorities are giving special attention to Karachi’s low-lying and flood-prone neighborhoods. These areas have experienced severe waterlogging during previous monsoon seasons and remain the highest priority for emergency operations.
Officials have already identified vulnerable locations across the city. Additional staff, heavy machinery, and other resources will be deployed to these areas to remove standing rainwater as quickly as possible.
To strengthen the emergency response, KWSC has placed its fleet of jetting and suction machines on standby. These machines will be used to clear blocked drains and remove accumulated water from roads and streets.
Executive Engineer (Workshop) Shafqat Hussain has been assigned to oversee the deployment and operation of the machinery. He will ensure that equipment is available where needed and reaches affected areas without delay.
Authorities have also appealed to residents to cooperate with emergency teams during the expected Heavy Monsoon Rains. Citizens have been urged not to remove manhole or drain covers during rainfall, as doing so can create serious safety hazards and disrupt drainage operations.
Officials warned that uncovered drains increase the risk of accidents and make it more difficult for emergency workers to manage floodwater effectively.
Residents have also been advised to report drainage issues, overflowing sewers, or any emergency situations to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation immediately. Prompt reporting will help authorities respond faster and reduce the impact of heavy rainfall.
The city administration hopes that advance preparations will help minimize disruption to daily life. Continuous monitoring of drainage systems and rapid deployment of emergency teams are expected to improve the city’s response.
