Two resolutions have been submitted in the Punjab Assembly seeking legal action against Fazlur Rehman over his recent remarks about Pakistan Army martyrs and the state’s authority in areas bordering Afghanistan.
The resolutions were submitted separately by Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) lawmaker Shoaib Siddiqui and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) member Raheela Khadim Hussain. Both resolutions criticize Fazlur Rehman‘s statements and describe them as harmful to national institutions.
According to the resolutions, comments that weaken public confidence in the armed forces can affect national unity. The lawmakers argued that such remarks may also benefit hostile elements seeking to create instability in the country.
The resolutions paid tribute to the sacrifices made by the Pakistan Army and other security agencies. They also reaffirmed the Punjab Assembly’s support for the country’s defence institutions.
The lawmakers urged authorities to take legal action against anyone found damaging the dignity and reputation of Pakistan’s security forces. However, Punjab Assembly resolutions are non-binding and cannot directly initiate legal proceedings.
If adopted, the resolutions would officially reflect the Assembly’s position on the matter. They would also mark a significant political response to the recent controversy involving Fazlur Rehman.
The debate began after a public gathering organized by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) in Kasur. During his speech, Fazlur Rehman discussed the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
While referring to military casualties, he remarked that soldiers receive salaries to fight and defend the country. His comments quickly sparked criticism from senior government officials and political leaders.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif strongly rejected the remarks. He said soldiers do not sacrifice their lives simply because they receive salaries. Instead, he said they serve the country out of patriotism, faith, commitment, and devotion.
Khawaja Asif added that questioning the sincerity of fallen soldiers crossed a moral boundary. He also said such remarks deeply hurt the families of Pakistan’s martyrs.
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal also criticized the comments. He said the remarks created the impression that the sacrifices of martyrs were being undervalued.
According to Ahsan Iqbal, respecting fallen soldiers is a shared national responsibility. He said every political party should honor those who have sacrificed their lives for the country’s security.
The coordinated response from government leaders has further intensified the political debate surrounding the issue. The controversy has continued to draw attention across political circles.
Although the Punjab Assembly resolutions do not carry legal authority on their own, they represent an official political stance if approved by the House. They also increase pressure on Fazlur Rehman as the debate over his remarks continues.
