ISLAMABAD: Google has expanded its digital skills initiative in Pakistan, increasing the total number of Google Career Certificates available across the country to 350,000. The move aims to help more people prepare for careers in an economy that is increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and digital technologies.
The latest milestone follows the addition of 150,000 new scholarships this year. With this expansion, Google is strengthening its long-term commitment to digital education and workforce development in Pakistan.
The Google Career Certificates program offers online courses that are recognized internationally. Participants can learn practical skills without attending traditional classroom-based training.
The courses cover several in-demand fields. These include Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, Cybersecurity, Project Management, Digital Marketing, and E-Commerce. The training is designed to equip learners with skills that match current industry needs.
According to the initiative, accessibility remains a key priority. The online format allows students and professionals from different parts of Pakistan to participate regardless of their location.
The program also helps reduce barriers such as limited access to professional training and the high cost of conventional education. By offering flexible online learning, Google aims to make career-focused education available to a wider audience.
Since launching its digital learning efforts in Pakistan in 2022, Google has steadily expanded its investment in skills development. The latest increase reflects a shift from offering individual learning opportunities to supporting broader workforce growth.
The initiative is not limited to awarding certificates. It also focuses on helping participants use their new skills in practical ways. Graduates are expected to apply their knowledge in employment, freelancing, entrepreneurship, and community-based projects.
Several local organizations are supporting the rollout of the program. These include TechValley, the Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC), and the Higher Education Department (HED). Their collaboration is helping extend the initiative to learners across the country.
Government support has also played an important role in expanding the program. Officials believe stronger digital skills will improve workforce readiness and encourage innovation in both the public and private sectors.
As part of this effort, the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication (MoITT) has introduced a new requirement for government officials. Every ministry official has been directed to complete two Google Career Certificate courses.
The decision is intended to improve digital capabilities within government departments. It also supports the adoption of artificial intelligence and other digital tools in public administration.
Experts believe initiatives like the Google Career Certificates program can help narrow Pakistanโs digital skills gap. They also see the training as an opportunity to improve employability and create new income opportunities for thousands of learners.
