Punjab government has delayed the official launch of the AI Subject in government primary schools due to infrastructure challenges. The decision comes as many schools still lack the computer labs required to support practical learning.
According to reports, the Punjab Education Curriculum Training and Assessment Authority (PECTAA) has already approved the teaching of Artificial Intelligence for students from Grade 1 to Grade 5. The AI Subject was expected to become part of the curriculum from the upcoming academic year.
However, officials have not yet issued the formal notification needed to begin implementation. The main reason behind the delay is the shortage of computer and AI lab facilities in government primary schools across the province.
Education authorities believe that introducing Artificial Intelligence at an early stage can help prepare students for a technology-driven future. At the same time, they acknowledge that many schools are not yet equipped with the necessary infrastructure to support the new curriculum.
The delay has also created uncertainty regarding the preparation of textbooks. Since the AI Subject has not been officially notified, the process of developing, printing, and distributing textbooks has not yet started.
Officials say the delay could affect the timely availability of learning materials before the next academic session begins.
To address the current challenges, education authorities are discussing an alternative approach. Instead of introducing the AI Subject as a separate course, they are considering adding Artificial Intelligence concepts as a chapter within existing subjects for primary students.
This proposal is aimed at ensuring that children receive basic knowledge of Artificial Intelligence without requiring expensive computer laboratories in every school.
According to officials, establishing dedicated AI and computer labs in thousands of government schools would require significant financial investment. The project is expected to cost millions of rupees, making immediate implementation difficult.
Education experts believe that introducing AI concepts gradually could help students develop early digital literacy while allowing schools more time to improve their infrastructure.
PECTAA officials confirmed that discussions regarding the AI curriculum are still ongoing. They said the authority is reviewing different implementation options before making a final decision.
Officials also stated that a formal notification regarding the AI Subject will be issued once all planning and administrative matters are completed.
The Punjab government has repeatedly emphasized the importance of modern education and digital skills. Introducing Artificial Intelligence into school education is considered part of broader efforts to prepare students for future careers shaped by technology and innovation.
