LONDON: Andy Burnham has officially become the United Kingdom’s 59th Prime Minister after being invited by King Charles III to form a new government. The Labour leader pledged to restore public trust, strengthen the economy, and deliver long-term reforms across the country.
Burnham took office after the departure of Sir Keir Starmer. King Charles III formally asked him to form a government at Buckingham Palace. The Labour Party elected Andy Burnham as its new leader last week. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed his unopposed leadership victory during the party conference.
In his first speech outside 10 Downing Street, Burnham admitted that many people had lost confidence in politics. He said political leaders had not always met public expectations. He promised that his government would work harder to rebuild trust and improve people’s lives.
The new Prime Minister described stability as the main goal of his administration. He said Britain must regain confidence in its institutions while creating long-term economic growth.
Andy Burnham announced plans to increase public investment and strengthen essential services. He said some key public services should return to public control to improve affordability and quality. He also promised greater support for British industries and a renewed focus on manufacturing.

While Andrew Bonar Law served as Prime Minister in 1922, Andy Burnham is the first British Prime Minister widely known by the name “Andy.” He is also the first Prime Minister since Harold Wilson to openly highlight his northern identity as a key part of his political image.
Known as the “King of the North,” Burnham gained national attention during the COVID-19 pandemic. He became widely recognized after challenging the UK government’s restrictions affecting Greater Manchester.
Born in Liverpool in 1970 and raised in Cheshire, Burnham joined the Labour Party at just 14 years old. He studied English Literature at the University of Cambridge before working in journalism and later entering politics.
He entered Parliament in 2001 and served under former Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. During that time, he held several senior cabinet positions, including Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Culture Secretary, and Health Secretary.
