Lt Gen Aamer Raza Promoted to Four-Star General, Given Key Military Appointment

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced the promotion of Lt Gen Aamer Raza to the rank of Four-Star General. Along with the promotion, he has also been appointed as the Commander National Strategic Command, a newly created position under Pakistan’s revised military command structure.

The announcement marks an important development in the country’s defence leadership. The prime minister congratulated Lt Gen Aamer Raza on his promotion and new appointment, expressing confidence in his ability to perform the responsibilities of the strategic role.

The position of Commander National Strategic Command was introduced through the Pakistan Army, Air Force and Navy (Amendment) Bills 2025. The legislation brought significant changes to Pakistan’s military command system by introducing new leadership positions and restructuring the country’s defence framework.

Under the revised law, the new command is responsible for overseeing key strategic matters within the country’s defence structure. The appointment reflects the government’s efforts to strengthen military coordination and improve the overall command system.

The amendments also led to the appointment of Field Marshal Asim Munir as the Chief of Defence Forces, another major change introduced under the updated legislation. The new military framework is designed to streamline command responsibilities across Pakistan’s armed forces.

The creation of the National Strategic Command came after the abolition of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) position. General Shamshad Mirza became the final officer to hold that office before the structural reforms were implemented.

According to the amended law, the prime minister has the authority to appoint the Commander National Strategic Command from among serving Pakistan Army generals. The appointment is made for a three-year term based on the recommendation of the Chief of Army Staff, who also serves as the Chief of Defence Forces under the revised system.

The promotion of Lt Gen Aamer Raza is considered one of the most significant military appointments since the implementation of the 2025 defence reforms. His new role is expected to involve overseeing strategic responsibilities linked to Pakistan’s national security framework.

Military analysts believe the revised command structure is intended to improve coordination among the armed forces while ensuring a more integrated approach to strategic decision-making. The introduction of new leadership positions is also expected to enhance operational efficiency across different branches of the military.

With his promotion to Four-Star General, Lt Gen Aamer Raza joins the country’s highest military leadership at a time when Pakistan continues to modernize its defence institutions. His appointment as Commander National Strategic Command represents another important step in implementing the military reforms introduced under the amended defence laws.
