KARACHI: The Sindh government has announced plans to introduce a women-only E-Taxi Service that will be operated by female drivers and cater exclusively to female passengers. The initiative aims to provide safer transportation while creating new employment opportunities for women across the province.
Senior Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon shared the announcement during a meeting with a high-level delegation from the British High Commission at his residence.
According to the minister, the upcoming E-Taxi Service is part of the provincial government’s broader efforts to improve women’s mobility and encourage greater participation in economic and social activities. He said the project will offer women a secure travel option while also opening new career opportunities in the transport sector.
Memon explained that the service will be operated entirely by women drivers. Female passengers will be able to travel in taxis driven by trained women, making the service more comfortable and secure for many commuters.
The Sindh government is also working to strengthen the infrastructure needed to support electric vehicles. Officials said charging stations and other essential facilities are being developed to encourage investment in electric transport across the province.
The minister noted that expanding electric vehicle infrastructure will help support the success of the E-Taxi Service while promoting environmentally friendly transportation.
He added that the initiative complements other programs introduced for women’s empowerment. One such project is the distribution of free pink electric scooters to working women and female students.
According to Memon, the scooter program is designed to make daily travel easier and more affordable. He said improved transportation can help women access education, employment, and other opportunities more independently.
The minister also highlighted a significant increase in the number of women obtaining driving licenses in Sindh. He said this reflects changing social attitudes and growing confidence among women drivers.
According to official figures shared during the meeting, only around 450 women applied for driving licenses a few years ago. That number has now increased to approximately 25,000 applicants.
Memon said this remarkable rise shows that more women are choosing to drive cars and motorcycles. He added that it also challenges long-standing stereotypes about women and driving.
The Sindh government believes that increasing women’s participation in transportation will contribute to greater economic independence. Officials say improved mobility can help women access jobs, education, and public services more easily.
The planned E-Taxi Service is expected to become another important step in promoting gender-inclusive transport policies in the province. Authorities believe the project will create a safer commuting environment while encouraging more women to join the workforce.
Although an official launch date has not yet been announced, preparations are underway to establish the required infrastructure and operational framework.
