Meta has announced a new Facebook Verified badge that allows eligible users to confirm their identity for free. The feature is designed to help users prove that a real person is behind their account. The company said the verification process uses a selfie video and will gradually become available in more countries.
The new Facebook Verified badge is different from the paid Meta Verified subscription. It focuses only on confirming that an account belongs to a real individual. Meta said the feature is intended to improve trust across the platform while reducing fake accounts.
To receive the badge, eligible users must complete a short identity verification process. They will be asked to record a selfie video using their device. Meta will compare the selfie video with the existing profile photos on the user’s account. If the images match, the verification request will be approved.
According to Meta, the process should take only a few minutes. Once the verification is complete, the new badge will appear on several parts of the platform. Initially, it will be visible on the user’s profile, Marketplace, Dating, and Groups. The company also plans to display the badge on Feed posts in a future update.
Meta explained that the badge simply confirms the authenticity of the account owner. It does not mean that Facebook endorses the user or guarantees that the person is trustworthy. The company said the badge should only be viewed as proof that the account belongs to a real individual.
The free verification feature is only available to users who meet certain requirements. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have an account in good standing. They must also follow Facebook’s Community Standards and have no record of fraud, scams, or deceptive behaviour. Meta added that users should not show signs of fake or inauthentic activity to qualify.
The company also confirmed that the free verification option is currently limited to personal accounts. It is not available for Facebook Pages or ProMode accounts at this stage.
Meta is introducing the feature in phases, starting with selected markets. More regions will gain access as the rollout expands over time. The company has not shared a complete global release schedule but said it plans to make the feature available to more users worldwide.
