Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province, introducing a temporary ban on Swimming, bathing, and unauthorized boating at various water bodies due to the ongoing monsoon season. The decision aims to reduce the risk of accidents and protect public safety during heavy rainfall.
According to a notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, the restrictions have been enforced because of rising water levels and dangerous conditions caused by continuous monsoon rains. Officials said the measures are necessary to prevent drowning incidents and other weather-related emergencies.
Under the new order, people are prohibited from bathing in rainwater that collects in open spaces, streets, roads, and other public areas. Authorities warned that such water can become hazardous during the rainy season and may pose serious risks to public health and safety.
The notification also places a complete ban on Swimming in dams, rivers, canals, ponds, and lakes across Punjab. Officials said these water bodies become more dangerous during monsoon due to strong currents, sudden increases in water levels, and poor visibility.
In addition, the government has banned boating without official permission in dams, rivers, canals, and distributaries. Authorities stated that only properly authorized boating activities will be allowed during the restriction period.
The Home Department confirmed that the order has been issued under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898. The restrictions will remain in effect for 60 days unless revised or withdrawn by the provincial government.
Officials explained that the decision was taken after assessing the increased risks associated with monsoon weather. Heavy rainfall often causes overflowing rivers, fast-moving water currents, and flooded areas, creating life-threatening conditions for visitors.
The Punjab Home Secretary has instructed all district administrations and law enforcement agencies to ensure the strict implementation of the notification. Local authorities have been directed to monitor public water bodies and take action against anyone violating the restrictions.
Authorities have also been asked to launch awareness campaigns to educate the public about the dangers of entering water bodies during the rainy season. These campaigns will encourage citizens to avoid risky activities and follow government safety guidelines.
Emergency services have repeatedly advised families to keep children away from canals, rivers, lakes, and rain-filled streets during periods of heavy rainfall. Officials believe public cooperation will play a key role in preventing avoidable accidents.
The government emphasized that the restrictions are purely preventive and have been introduced to safeguard lives. Citizens have been urged to respect the ban on Swimming, follow official instructions, and avoid unnecessary visits to hazardous water locations until weather conditions improve.
