More than 9,000 people have moved to evacuation centres after a powerful earthquake struck southwestern Japan, according to government officials.
The earthquake caused widespread damage and forced thousands of residents to leave their homes for safety. Authorities said emergency teams are working to provide support and assess the situation.
Japan government spokesman Minoru Kihara said that 9,186 people had taken shelter in 506 evacuation centres across five prefectures. These areas include Kumamoto and Fukuoka, which were among the affected regions.
The evacuation figures were recorded as of 7:00 am local time on Wednesday. Officials said many residents remained in temporary shelters due to safety concerns following the major quake.
The earthquake also resulted in casualties. Authorities confirmed that at least 13 people were killed after the disaster. Several others were injured and required medical attention.
According to officials, seven people suffered serious injuries, while 29 others received minor injuries. Rescue and relief operations continued as authorities monitored affected areas.
Emergency services have been working to assist residents and manage the impact of the earthquake. Local authorities are also checking damaged buildings and infrastructure.
The situation remains under observation as aftershocks and further risks continue to concern residents. Officials have advised people in affected areas to remain cautious and follow safety instructions.
