Pakistan Urges US and Iran to Return to Islamabad MoU Amid Regional Tensions

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has stepped up diplomatic efforts as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to raise concerns across the Middle East. Officials say dialogue remains the only way to prevent the crisis from spreading further.

The Foreign Office said Pakistan’s civil and military leadership is actively engaging with regional partners to support peace and reduce tensions. The government has urged both Washington and Tehran to return to negotiations under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said diplomacy remains the best solution to the current situation. He stressed that continued dialogue is necessary to avoid further escalation and maintain regional stability.

According to Andrabi, the situation has shown some improvement in recent days. However, Pakistan is continuing efforts to encourage both sides to resume technical-level discussions under the Islamabad MoU framework.

He said restarting negotiations would help reduce misunderstandings and lower the risk of further conflict. The spokesperson added that diplomatic engagement remains a top priority for Islamabad.

The Foreign Office also expressed concern about developments in key regional waterways. Officials said the situation around the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab remains sensitive and requires close monitoring.

These strategic routes play an important role in global trade and energy supplies. Any disruption could affect several countries in the region and beyond.

Andrabi said Pakistan has intensified diplomatic contacts with friendly countries to support regional peace. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently held a telephone conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to discuss the evolving situation.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also remained active on the diplomatic front. On July 25, he spoke with the Saudi foreign minister regarding regional developments.

The Foreign Office further said Ishaq Dar also held discussions with Jordan’s foreign minister. In addition, Kuwait’s foreign minister recently completed an official visit to Islamabad as part of ongoing diplomatic engagement.

Officials believe these contacts reflect Pakistan’s commitment to promoting dialogue and preventing further instability in the region.

The spokesperson warned that the confrontation between Iran and the United States should not spread to neighboring countries. He said wider conflict would increase security risks across the Middle East.

Referring to a statement from Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defence, Andrabi said Riyadh had reported multiple drones launched from Iraq targeting Saudi territory.

He added that Pakistan is closely following Saudi Arabia’s position on the reported incident. However, he said he was not aware of any official response issued by Iraq regarding the claims.
