Pakistan will invite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the 2027 Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Islamabad. However, the invitation is part of the organisation’s official protocol and does not indicate any new bilateral diplomatic initiative between Pakistan and India.
Pakistan’s Foreign Office has confirmed that the country will host the SCO Heads of State Summit in 2027. Under the rules of the regional organisation, the host nation is required to send formal invitations to the leaders of all member states.
As India is a permanent member of the SCO, Narendra Modi will receive an official invitation to attend the summit in Islamabad.
The Foreign Office clarified that the invitation should not be interpreted as a sign of improved relations between Pakistan and India. Officials said it is a standard diplomatic requirement that every SCO host country must follow.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is a regional political, economic and security alliance that brings together member countries to discuss cooperation on issues such as trade, regional security and economic development. The organisation’s summit is attended by the heads of state or government of all member nations.
According to the Foreign Office, Pakistan’s responsibility as the summit host is to invite all ten SCO member states without exception. This includes India, regardless of the current state of bilateral relations between the two countries.
Officials also stressed that the invitation to Narendra Modi is being issued strictly under the SCO’s established procedures. They said it should not be viewed as an attempt to restart bilateral dialogue or signal a separate diplomatic breakthrough.
Pakistan and India have experienced strained relations for several years, with limited official engagement between the two neighbours. Despite these differences, both countries remain members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and regularly participate in its meetings under the organisation’s framework.
Hosting the 2027 SCO Summit places Pakistan under the same diplomatic obligations followed by previous host nations. Extending invitations to every member state is a routine part of the summit process.
Further details about the summit schedule, participating delegations and official confirmations are expected to be announced closer to the event. Whether Narendra Modi ultimately attends the summit will depend on the Government of India’s decision after receiving the formal invitation.
