More than 20 million pilgrims have gathered in Karbala, Iraq, for Arbaeen 2026, one of the world’s largest annual religious gatherings.
Every year, millions of devotees travel from across Iraq and many other countries to commemorate Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The pilgrimage is regarded as one of the most significant events in the Islamic calendar for millions of Muslims.
A large number of pilgrims are making the traditional journey on foot from Najaf to Karbala, a route that has become a defining feature of the Arbaeen pilgrimage. Along the way, volunteers and local communities provide food, water, medical assistance and accommodation to visitors.
The gathering brings together worshippers from different nationalities and backgrounds, reflecting the global significance of the annual commemoration.
Arbaeen marks the 40th day after Ashura, commemorating the sacrifice of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions at the Battle of Karbala. Millions of people participate each year to pay their respects and reaffirm the values associated with the event.
Authorities in Iraq continue to manage security, transportation and public services as large numbers of pilgrims arrive in Karbala during the commemorations.
