Instagram’s Threads Web Version Expected This Week

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Meta is poised to introduce a web version of Threads, its direct competitor to X (formerly known as Twitter), in the early days of this week. This move aims to fill the significant gap of a browser version for Threads, thereby making it more accessible to users on personal computers.

Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has recently highlighted the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance Threads, including an improved search feature that is presently limited to usernames only. He mentioned this development earlier this month, expressing the intention for it to be ready within “the next few weeks.”

However, as outlined by sources cited by WSJ, these launch plans are not yet final and could potentially change. Adam Mosseri, the Head of Instagram, provided insights into Threads last week and revealed that Meta had conducted internal testing of an initial version for one to two weeks. He acknowledged that further refinements are necessary before a wider release can be initiated.

Threads emerged on the scene as a somewhat basic replica of Twitter, just around six weeks ago. Remarkably, it quickly surpassed the milestone of 100 million users, attracting a diverse range of celebrities and brands.

Despite its rapid growth, the platform has lacked several crucial functionalities that the company has been gradually incorporating over time. Notably, a follow feed was recently introduced, and the ability to verify a link using a Mastodon profile was added. This particular move suggests that Meta may indeed be demonstrating a level of commitment to integrating with the decentralized social network protocol, ActivityPub.
