ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has changed the approval process for small-scale solar systems in Pakistan.
Under the new decision, electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) can approve solar power systems up to 25 kilowatts (kW). The move is expected to simplify the process for consumers seeking to install small solar setups.
Nepra issued a notification announcing amendments to the Solar Regulations 2026. The revised rules give DISCOs greater authority over the approval of smaller solar installations.
Previously, consumers installing solar systems were required to seek approval from Nepra. The updated regulations remove this requirement for systems with a capacity of up to 25kW.
Consumers will now be able to approach their relevant electricity distribution company directly. The concerned DISCO will review the application and grant approval under the revised regulatory framework.
The change applies specifically to solar power systems with a capacity of 25kW or less. Larger installations will continue to follow the applicable regulatory requirements.
Nepra said the amendment aims to make the approval process easier for consumers. It also transfers responsibility for smaller solar projects to the relevant distribution companies.
The revised system could reduce the administrative steps involved in installing small-scale solar power systems. Consumers will no longer need to complete a separate approval process with the national power regulator.
The decision comes as solar energy continues to attract interest among electricity consumers. Many households and small businesses are exploring alternative power sources to meet their electricity needs.
