Bank of Punjab Set to Receive Rs30 Billion Capital Boost From Punjab Govt

Bank of Punjab Set to Receive Rs30 Billion Capital Boost From Punjab Govt

Bank of Punjab board has approved a proposal for a major capital injection from the Punjab government.

Under the proposal, BOP could receive up to Rs30 billion through an equity injection. The bank said the additional capital would strengthen its financial position and support future growth plans.

The proposal was approved during a board meeting held on August 7, 2026. However, the transaction still requires statutory, corporate, shareholder and regulatory approvals.

BOP to Issue Ordinary Shares to Punjab Government

Under the proposed arrangement, ordinary shares will be issued directly to the Government of Punjab.

The shares will not be offered through a traditional rights issue. The proposed issue price has been set at Rs38.20 per share.

However, the final price could be higher depending on the market price at issuance. If BOP shares trade above Rs38.20, another pricing formula will apply.

The issue price would then be the prevailing market price plus a 5% premium. Therefore, Rs38.20 per share will serve as the minimum price for the transaction.

Rs30 Billion Injection Aimed at Supporting Growth

The bank described the proposed investment as an important milestone in its ongoing transformation. According to BOP, the capital will provide greater financial capacity for continued expansion.

The bank has expanded its balance sheet and improved its financial performance during recent years. It has also developed significant positions across several important areas of Pakistan’s banking sector.

These include SME finance, agriculture finance, affordable housing and digital lending. The bank also highlighted its presence in credit cards and initiatives supporting women’s leadership.

It continues expanding its activities in export-focused commercial and corporate banking. The bank said these businesses support economic activity, employment and financial inclusion.

Bank Says Capital Injection Is for Growth

Rapid expansion has also increased pressure on the bank’s existing capital base.

The proposed equity injection is intended to provide additional capacity for future business growth. A stronger capital position could also support further expansion in low-cost deposits.

The bank stressed that the proposed capital raise is intended as growth capital. It is not being presented as a response to deterioration in the bank’s underlying performance.

The bank reported strong financial results for 2025. According to the provided information, revenue increased by approximately 29% during the year.

Year-on-year earnings growth was reported at more than 40%. The bank’s share price also recorded significant appreciation during the period.

Fresh Capital to Support International Expansion

The additional capital could also support the next phase of the bank’s expansion strategy. This includes an international venture recently approved by the State Bank of Pakistan.

The bank intends to expand businesses where it already maintains strong market positions. It also plans to explore new growth opportunities within Pakistan and internationally.

BOP President and CEO Zafar Masud described the proposed investment as a vote of confidence from the Punjab government.

He said the capital would help expand priority areas, including SME and agriculture financing. Affordable housing and digital lending are also among the bank’s targeted areas.

Equity Injection to Be Completed in Phases

The proposed Rs30 billion investment will not be completed through a single transaction. Instead, BOP plans to carry out the equity injection in phases.

The overall process is targeted for completion by June 30, 2027. Final completion will remain subject to all required approvals.

The Bank of Punjab is majority-owned by the Government of Punjab and listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange. It operates through a network of physical branches and digital banking services across Pakistan.
