Pakistan Plans $2.5 Billion ML-1 Railway Upgrade for Karachi-Rohri Route

Pakistan Plans $2.5 Billion ML-1 Railway Upgrade for Karachi-Rohri Route

Pakistan is planning a major $2.5 billion upgrade of the ML-1 Railway network.

The first phase will focus on the Karachi-Rohri/Sukkur section. This important rail corridor covers approximately 480 kilometres.

The planned project aims to modernise Pakistan’s ageing rail infrastructure. It will include improvements to tracks, stations, signalling systems and freight facilities.

The upgrade is also expected to improve safety and operational efficiency across the busy corridor.

ML-1 Railway Upgrade to Cover 480km Route

The Karachi-Rohri/Sukkur section plays an important role in Pakistan’s national rail network.

Under the proposed plan, around 480 kilometres of the ML-1 route will be upgraded during the first phase. The project will focus on modernising tracks to support faster and safer train operations.

Stations along the route are also expected to receive improvements. Modern facilities could help provide better services for passengers and railway operations.

Signalling infrastructure will also be upgraded as part of the project. Improved signalling can support safer train movements and more efficient management of rail traffic.

Freight facilities are another major part of the proposed investment.

The corridor currently handles a significant share of Pakistan Railways’ freight operations. Improving these facilities could strengthen the movement of goods across the country.

Train Speeds Could Reach 160km/h

One major objective of the ML-1 Railway project is to increase train speeds. Following the upgrade, trains could operate at speeds of up to 160 kilometres per hour.

Faster operations could reduce travel times between major destinations along the route. However, the final impact will depend on project implementation and operating conditions after completion.

The project also aims to improve safety across the corridor. Modern tracks and signalling systems are expected to support more reliable operations.

Corridor Handles Most Rail Freight

The importance of the ML-1 corridor is reflected in its current traffic levels. According to the provided project details, the corridor carries around 76% of Pakistan’s rail passenger traffic.

It also handles approximately 98% of Pakistan Railways’ freight traffic. These figures make the route an important part of the country’s transport infrastructure.

The proposed $2.5 billion investment could therefore have implications for both passenger and freight services. Improved freight operations could help businesses move goods more efficiently between major economic centres.

Meanwhile, faster passenger services could improve connectivity between cities along the ML-1 network. The planned Railway upgrade represents a significant infrastructure project for Pakistan.
