Former Australian cricketer and Karachi Kings captain David Warner has been convicted over a drink-driving offence in Sydney.
A Sydney court fined the 39-year-old A$1,500 after he pleaded guilty to the offence.
Warner was arrested in April after failing a roadside breath test during the Easter weekend. The court heard that he was driving his family home after attending a social event.
David Warner Fails Roadside Breath Test
Police stopped Warner while he was driving in Sydney.
According to the provided information, his blood-alcohol reading was more than twice the legal limit. Children were also reportedly travelling inside the vehicle at the time.
The case was later heard at Waverley Local Court, where Warner entered a guilty plea. The court also heard details about events before the roadside test.
David Warner reportedly attempted to switch seats with a female passenger after noticing the breath-testing operation. Judge Clare Farnan addressed the seriousness of the offence while delivering the court’s decision.
She said Warner was unlikely to commit a similar offence again. However, the judge also highlighted the potentially serious consequences associated with drink-driving.
Court Imposes A$1,500 Fine
The court imposed a fine of A$1,500 as part of Warner’s penalty.
He will also be required to install an alcohol interlock device in his vehicle. An alcohol interlock system tests a driver’s breath before allowing the vehicle to start.
The vehicle will not start if the system detects alcohol above the permitted level. Such devices are designed to reduce the risk of repeat drink-driving offences.
Cricket NSW Responds to Incident
Warner continues to have an active role in Australian cricket. He currently captains Sydney Thunder in Australia’s Big Bash League.
He also works as a cricket commentator for Fox Sports Australia. Cricket NSW said it takes the incident seriously.
The organisation also reaffirmed its commitment to promoting responsible and safe driving among players. Warner has also been associated with the Pakistan Super League as captain of Karachi Kings.
The conviction comes as David Warner continues his involvement in domestic T20 cricket and broadcasting after his international career.
The court’s ruling concludes the proceedings described in the available information.
