Heavy rainfall has caused flooding across Rawalpindi and Islamabad, disrupting daily life and raising safety concerns.
Authorities have announced a Holiday for all public and private educational institutions in Rawalpindi. The decision comes as water levels continue rising in Nullah Lai.
All schools, colleges, universities and other educational institutions in Rawalpindi will remain closed as a precautionary measure.
Nullah Lai Water Level Rises
The water level in Nullah Lai crossed 28 feet at the Katarian point. Meanwhile, Gawalmandi recorded a level of around 23.5 feet.
The rising water has increased flooding concerns for communities located near the waterway.
Heavy rainfall was also recorded across different areas. Shamsabad received 197mm of rain, while New Katarian recorded 182mm.
Golra received around 157mm of rainfall.
Flood warnings were issued after the water level in Nullah Lai continued rising. Danger sirens were also sounded around Gawalmandi.
Residents living close to Nullah Lai were advised to leave vulnerable locations and move towards safer areas.
Several Rawalpindi Areas Flooded
The intense rainfall has inundated several parts of Rawalpindi.
Rainwater entered shops in Raja Bazaar, Jamia Masjid Road and Imambargah Chowk. Low-lying areas including Arya Mohalla, Millat Colony, Javed Colony and Dhoke Khabba were also submerged.
Water entered homes in Safdarabad, Gali Loharan and Fauji Colony near Pirwadhai. Union Councils 4 and 5 also reported flooding. Vehicles were submerged in Awan Colony following the heavy downpour.
Model Raja Bazaar was also affected by accumulated rainwater.
Waterlogging was reported on Chaudhry Road, Sadiqabad Service Road, Dhoke Kala Khan and Mochi Bazaar.
Rain Emergency Declared in Rawalpindi
Authorities have declared a rain emergency due to the worsening weather conditions.
People living in vulnerable and low-lying locations have been instructed to move towards safer areas.
The administration announced the Holiday for educational institutions to protect students and staff during the flooding situation.
The closure applies to government and private educational institutions across Rawalpindi.
NDMA Forecasts More Rain
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority has forecast further rainfall during the next 48 hours.
Rain is expected across parts of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
The NDMA warned that continued rainfall in upper regions could increase river flows. Streams and nullahs could also experience flooding if heavy rainfall continues.
Authorities have been advised to remain alert as weather conditions develop.
