The federal government is reportedly considering a new fuel-saving plan amid rising international oil prices.
The proposed Smart Lockdown could introduce a four-day working week across Pakistan.
Under the reported plan, offices and educational institutions could remain closed for three days each week.
However, the proposal has not yet been officially confirmed through a fresh government notification.
Four-Day Workweek Under Consideration
Reports suggest both government and private offices could operate for four days each week.
Schools, colleges and universities could also follow the proposed four-day schedule. The remaining three days would be observed as weekly holidays under the reported plan.
The main objective would be to reduce daily travel and overall petroleum consumption. Fewer working days could reduce commuting by employees and students.
This could also lower transport activity and fuel demand across major cities.
Rising Oil Prices Drive Fuel-Saving Discussions
The reported Smart Lockdown proposal comes amid renewed pressure on international oil markets.
Global energy markets have faced supply disruptions linked to tensions in the Middle East. The US Energy Information Administration has also raised its oil price forecasts for 2026.
The agency cited lower global inventories and significant supply disruptions as important factors. Brent crude has moved above $100 per barrel during recent market volatility.
These developments have increased concerns about fuel costs for oil-importing countries, including Pakistan.
Pakistan Previously Adopted Fuel-Saving Measures
Pakistan has already introduced similar measures during earlier fuel-conservation efforts.
A Cabinet Division notification in March 2026 introduced a four-day workweek in the public sector. The measures also included work-from-home arrangements for some government employees.
Certain essential operations were excluded from those arrangements.
These included law enforcement agencies and other important public services.
Domestic Fuel Prices Remain Under Pressure
Pakistan is also dealing with higher domestic petroleum prices. The latest petroleum price notification listed by OGRA took effect on September 12.
Petrol and high-speed diesel prices have increased during recent weeks. Higher international oil prices can create additional pressure on Pakistan’s fuel import costs.
Smart Lockdown Remains a Proposal
The reported three-day closure plan has not yet been formally approved.
No fresh official notification has confirmed a nationwide three-day weekend under the proposed Smart Lockdown.
Therefore, existing office and educational schedules remain unchanged unless authorities announce otherwise.
If approved, the measure could affect schools, offices, businesses and public transport across Pakistan.
