AI-generated scams and traditional spam are making email inboxes harder to manage. The problem can be worse for people who use one email address across many websites.
Writing for Android Police, Prarthana Gopal highlighted four Gmail settings she uses to reduce unwanted emails. These settings can help manage phishing attempts, spam, and suspicious AI-generated messages.
Report Suspicious Emails as Phishing
One useful step is reporting suspicious emails directly as phishing.
Phishing emails often pretend to come from trusted companies or services. Their goal may be to steal passwords, financial details, or other personal information.
Users should avoid opening suspicious links or downloading unknown attachments.
To report an email, open the message and click the three-dot menu. Then select the “Report phishing” option.
Gmail already detects many suspicious messages and may display security warnings. However, some phishing emails can still reach the main inbox.
Reporting suspicious messages gives Google additional information to analyze potential abuse. The reported message is also moved to the Spam folder.
Users can reverse the action if they accidentally report a legitimate email.
Create Stricter Gmail Filters
Filters can help users automatically manage unwanted emails.
Open Settings and select “See all settings.” Then go to “Filters and Blocked Addresses” and create a new filter.
Users can filter messages based on senders, subjects, keywords, file sizes, and other conditions.
They can then choose what happens to matching emails. Options include deleting, archiving, starring, or marking messages as read.
Deleting automatically may be useful for persistent unwanted messages. However, filters should be created carefully to avoid removing important emails.
Block Entire Domains Carefully
Blocking one sender may not stop a wider spam campaign.
Scammers can use several email addresses connected to the same domain. Users can create filters targeting an entire domain when a clear pattern appears.
However, the domain should be checked carefully before creating the filter.
A small mistake could cause legitimate messages to be filtered or deleted.
Users should also avoid creating unnecessary filters. Too many filters can become difficult to review and maintain.
Review Your Blocked Senders
Gmail also lets users block individual email addresses.
Open an unwanted email and select the three-dot menu. From there, choose the option to block the sender.
Future emails from that address will normally be directed to Spam. The blocked sender is not notified about the action.
Users can review blocked addresses through the “Filters and Blocked Addresses” section in Settings.
Addresses can also be unblocked if they were added accidentally.
These settings cannot eliminate every scam or spam message. However, regularly reviewing filters and blocked senders can help users maintain a cleaner inbox.

Users should still remain cautious when receiving unexpected emails. They should verify suspicious requests before sharing personal information or opening unfamiliar links.
