Capital Development Authority (CDA) is preparing to introduce a new Electric Bus service in Islamabad to promote tourism and improve public transport facilities for visitors.
The proposed double-decker electric buses will provide a dedicated city tour service. The initiative aims to help tourists and residents explore major attractions of the federal capital through an environment-friendly transport option.
According to CDA plans, the initial service will include four double-decker buses. These buses will operate on a 25-kilometre tourism route starting from F-9 Park.
The planned route will cover several popular locations in Islamabad. These include Faisal Mosque, Lok Virsa, and Shakarparian.
CDA Plans Electric Bus Tourism Service
CDA officials said the authority has contacted Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) for a feasibility study. HIT will review the project and provide estimated costs for the proposed buses.
The CDA will decide the procurement process after receiving recommendations from HIT. The authority is also aiming to make the service operational within three months, if required arrangements are completed.
The proposed Electric Bus fleet will use modern battery-powered vehicles. These buses are expected to reduce environmental impact and provide a cleaner travel option for city tours.
CDA is also considering importing the buses from China. The process may follow a similar approach used for Islamabad’s existing electric bus fleet.
HIT has experience in designing, engineering, manufacturing, and testing electric buses for public transport and other applications.
Existing Electric Transport Network in Islamabad
The CDA already operates an electric bus network in Islamabad through a private contractor. The current service covers more than 20 routes across the city.
The existing fleet includes over 160 electric buses. These buses are being used daily by a large number of citizens for regular commuting.
The new double-decker service will focus specifically on tourism. It will connect multiple attractions through a single route, making sightseeing more convenient.
The project is part of Islamabad’s efforts to improve sustainable transportation options. The introduction of a tourism-focused Electric Bus service could provide visitors with a modern way to explore the capital.
The CDA has also previously announced plans for a tram service in Islamabad. However, the project has not become operational yet.

The authority said further decisions about the double-decker electric buses will depend on feasibility recommendations and procurement arrangements.
