“Smash the Patriarchy,” reads the banner held by male students in Delhi as they march in solidarity with women protesting the institutional mishandling of brutal rape cases involving minors.

The students publicly condemned the response to the cases, arguing that cancelling classes cannot make an unsafe world safer for women.

Standing alongside women protesters, whose own slogan is “Mard pe bharosa nahin” (“Don’t trust men”), the students raised their own message of solidarity: “Equality is non-negotiable. It’s our job to make the world a safe space for women to exist.”

Their message is simple: creating a safer world for women isn’t solely women’s responsibility. Men have a role to play, too.
