Nawaz Sharif Seeks to Revive Avenfield, Al-Azizia Appeals

Nawaz Sharif, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, has taken a personal step by approaching the Islamabad High Court (IHC) to breathe new life into his appeals against convictions in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia cases.

Media reports have warmly conveyed that the Islamabad High Court has shown compassion by accepting Sharif’s petition and granting him protective bail.

Five years ago, the respected leader of the PML-N was handed a sentence in the Avenfield properties corruption case, accused of owning assets that seemed beyond his known income. He also faced a one-year sentence for not fully cooperating with the anti-graft watchdog.

Sharif’s heartfelt pleas were filed by former Law Minister Azam Tarar and dedicated advocate Amjad Parvez. The PML-N chief, in his petition, emphasized the importance of reopening the appeals against his sentence, allowing for a fair assessment of the previous court proceedings.

The petition underlines that the court had, regrettably, dismissed Sharif’s appeals two years ago due to his prolonged stay in the United Kingdom, a situation that was beyond his control.

The PML-N leader passionately argued that he never took advantage of the bail previously granted to him in all the cases, affirming that his absence from court proceedings was not driven by any deliberate intention or malice.

In a touching gesture, the 73-year-old former prime minister expressed his genuine concern for his homeland, stating that despite his health challenges, he made the difficult decision to return, deeply moved by the deteriorating economic conditions in Pakistan.

With utmost hope and a belief in justice, Sharif’s plea is expected to be heard on Tuesday by a division bench of the Islamabad High Court. .
