In a bid to enhance security and combat potential threats such as spam, phishing scams, and account hijacking, Google has announced the closure of unused Gmail accounts beginning in December 2023. This move aims to protect users by preventing attacks on abandoned accounts, which are more vulnerable due to a lack of regular security updates, including essential features like two-factor authentication (2FA).
The account closure process will be executed in multiple phases, starting with accounts that were created but have remained inactive. Google emphasizes its commitment to user notification, stating that multiple notifications will be sent before the deletion process begins. The impact of account deletion will extend to all linked Google services, including Gmail, Drive, Docs, Meet, Calendar, and Photos.
