New Practical Exam System for Medical Colleges

The Academic Council and Boards of Studies at the University of Health Sciences (UHS) have greenlit a significant overhaul in the practical examination format for medical colleges.

This substantial change involves shifting from the conventional viva voce exam to the Objective Structured Viva Examination (OSVE), a move aimed at enhancing assessment methodologies.

  • OSVE has gained recognition for its efficacy in evaluating students’ grasp of concepts and their professional communication skills, introducing a fresh dimension to assessment.
  • The examination structure revolves around multiple ‘stations,’ strategically designed to evaluate specific learning objectives at each station, ensuring a comprehensive assessment approach.

  • While OSPE and OSCE have been integral examination methods, OSVE, making its debut in Pakistan, has showcased remarkable effectiveness in assessment systems globally.
  • The Academic Council and Boards, chaired by VC Prof Ahsan Waheed Rathore, have determined the adoption of the Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE), Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), and OSVE frameworks for Oral/Practical/Clinical examinations.
  • This year onwards, first professional MBBS candidates will undergo rigorous assessments through 12 observed stations, aligning with the university’s new modular curriculum.
  • The 12 stations will include seven for OSPE, three for OSCE, and two for OSVE, each supervised by external examiners, ensuring impartial evaluation.
