The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has unveiled plans to plant 10 million trees in the Margalla Hills at a cost exceeding Rs. 2 billion, as reported by a national daily.
The civic authority has outlined a comprehensive PC-1 for the project, aimed at augmenting biodiversity and green coverage in the Margalla Hills. The proposed PC-1, titled “Enhancing the biodiversity and green cover by managing the natural resources, maintenance and rehabilitation of the landscape of Margalla Hills National Park,” is set to span five years, with an estimated cost of Rs. 2,158.614 million.

Primarily, the project seeks to enrich the flora and fauna of the national park, while simultaneously preserving its ecological integrity to attract visitors and tourists. Additionally, it aims to contribute to climate change mitigation and enhance the park’s aesthetic appeal.
Acknowledging the significance of the Margalla Hills National Park as a sanctuary for diverse flora and fauna, the document underscores its pivotal role in Islamabad’s environmental ecosystem and underscores the urgency in conserving and enhancing its natural resources.
The PC-I highlights pressing environmental challenges, including rapid urbanization leading to a loss of green cover, construction activities, and depletion of groundwater. It also identifies invasive species like lantana and paper mulberry covering substantial areas within the park, hindering the growth of indigenous species.
Given the mountains’ crucial role as a watershed and primary freshwater source, the project emphasizes the need for robust conservation efforts. Priority will be accorded to local species such as ‘chir pine,’ ‘amaltas,’ and ‘kachnar,’ with dedicated measures for tree protection, including the employment of guards.
Furthermore, the CDA intends to construct check dams and water ponds within the park, aiming to optimize water resources and promote sustainable environmental practices.
