Nassau County, New York, has enacted a bill prohibiting masks at public protests, specifically targeting pro-Palestinian demonstrators opposing U.S. support for Israel’s Gaza conflict. The ban, approved by all 12 Republican legislators while the seven Democrats abstained, aims to prevent protesters from concealing their identities to avoid accountability, though civil rights advocates argue it infringes on free speech.
The new law classifies wearing masks to hide one’s identity as a misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in prison and a $1,000 fine, with exceptions for medical, health, or religious reasons. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman supports the bill, asserting that anonymity at public protests is unacceptable unless for specific exceptions.
