SpaceX Launches Mission to Rescue Stranded Astronauts

SpaceX

SpaceX has successfully launched a mission to rescue two astronauts stranded aboard the International Space Station (ISS) since June. The Dragon capsule, carrying supplies and two empty seats for astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on September 28, 2024.

Originally, Wilmore and Williams were to remain on the ISS for eight days. However, a fault in the Boeing Starliner spacecraft forced its return to Earth without crew members, extending the astronauts’ stay. NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Gorbunov are also aboard the Dragon capsule to deliver fresh supplies and assist in the rescue.

The launch was delayed due to Hurricane Helene, which had caused extensive damage across southern states, including Florida. The Dragon capsule is expected to dock with the ISS on Sunday at 21:30 GMT, with plans for Wilmore and Williams to return to Earth by February.

In other news, SpaceX is considering a $15 billion investment to improve Starlink satellite internet services in Vietnam, marking its expansion into Southeast Asia. The investment aims to provide reliable internet access in remote regions with difficult terrain.
