Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Unveils Kisan Card Initiative

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz launched the “Kisan Card” initiative in Hafizabad on Monday, aimed at supporting farmers by minimizing the role of intermediaries and ensuring that benefits reach farmers directly. During a ceremony attended by leaders from the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N), including Rana Sanaullah and Maryam Aurangzeb, the cards were distributed to farmers.

Maryam noted that the initiative was originally intended to be launched by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who was unable to attend due to international commitments. She emphasized the government’s dedication to creating policies that prioritize farmer welfare, especially in light of rising wheat prices. “We faced criticism for not purchasing wheat earlier, but ensuring farmers’ profit margins remains a priority,” she remarked.

In addition, Maryam announced an upcoming “Green Tractor Scheme,” for which 1.5 million applications have already been received. This program will provide subsidies of up to Rs1 million on tractors that typically cost around Rs4 million. Furthermore, a significant initiative worth Rs10-15 billion will establish machinery hubs in each tehsil, allowing farmers to access equipment at affordable rates.

To help reduce energy costs, she also revealed plans to convert tube wells currently powered by diesel and petrol to solar energy, with an initial target of converting 7,000 units. This move is expected to significantly lower electricity bills for farmers.
