Rohit Sharma’s Batting Struggles Impacting His Leadership, Say Former Teammates

Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma’s ongoing batting woes are starting to affect his captaincy, according to former teammates Harbhajan Singh and Cheteshwar Pujara. The India skipper has struggled with form, managing just one half-century in his last 12 test innings, which include eight single-digit scores.

In the second test against Australia in Adelaide, Rohit’s move to the middle order didn’t provide any relief as he scored just three and six runs. His absence from the opening test in Perth due to personal reasons was followed by a defeat in Adelaide, where Australia won by 10 wickets. Commentators noted that his captaincy lacked aggression during the match, with some viewing his approach as too defensive.

Harbhajan Singh, speaking to Star Sports, stated that a player’s performance directly impacts their decision-making on the field. “When a player scores runs, he makes better decisions,” Singh said, hoping Rohit can regain form to improve his leadership.

Pujara echoed similar sentiments, advising the captain to focus on building his innings steadily before attempting to accelerate. “When a captain is out of form, it affects his captaincy as well,” Pujara noted, recommending that Rohit focus on his first 20 or 30 runs before looking to capitalize.

The third test in Brisbane begins on Saturday, with Rohit likely returning to the opener’s position alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, and KL Rahul moving to the middle order.
