Minister of State for IT and Telecom, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, presented a landmark piece of legislation for the ‘Digital Nation Pakistan’ initiative in the National Assembly on Monday. The initiative aims to create a unified national framework for digitisation, focusing on three critical sectors: the economy, governance, and society.
Fatima shared her hope that the legislation would be passed into law soon, leading to the establishment of the National Digital Commission, which will be chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The commission will also include Chief Ministers from Pakistanโs provinces, along with heads of key regulatory bodies such as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), NADRA, and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).

One of the initiative’s main goals is to create a unified digital identity for every Pakistani citizen, which Fatima believes will unlock the country’s vast potential. Additionally, the formation of the Pakistan Digital Authority is planned to oversee the development of a comprehensive blueprint for national digitisation.
Fatima expressed optimism about the future of Pakistanโs technology sector, expecting a surge in digital infrastructure investment in the coming years.
