One-Fifth of the World’s Children Affected by War: UNICEF

UNICEF

UNICEF has reported a grim reality: nearly one in five children globally now live in war-impacted regions, with 473 million children experiencing the worst violence since World War II, a number that has nearly doubled since 1990.

In 2024, a record 32,990 grave violations against children have been documented, and nearly 44% of the victims of the Gaza conflict were children. The war in Ukraine has also seen more child casualties in the first nine months of 2024 than in all of 2023.

UNICEF’s Executive Director Catherine Russell called 2024 one of the most devastating years for children in conflict zones, highlighting challenges like lack of education, malnutrition, and displacement. A rise in violence against women and girls, particularly in Haiti, and the ongoing malnutrition crisis in conflict zones like Sudan and Gaza, add to the crisis. UNICEF also reports that half a million individuals in five conflict-affected countries are facing famine.

The healthcare situation in Gaza is dire, with a polio outbreak leading to a mass vaccination campaign that reached 90% of children. However, 40% of children in conflict zones globally are in urgent need of humanitarian aid.
